OutTraveler has released its list of “Top 5 Honeymoon Destinations,” and there’s not a fresh or surprising pick in the bunch:
- Hawaii
- Provincetown
- Montreal
- Santa Fe
- Puerto Vallarta
(In Hawaii, OutTraveler actually recommends staying at the “hip, boutique Wyland Waikiki.” Really? The artist who splashes dancing dolphins on everything from neckties and beach towels is hip? In that case, I’m breaking out Grandma’s Norman Rockwell dinner plates for my next gay soiree.)

Another "hip" Wyland
Sure, same-sex couples want to feel comfortable on their honeymoon, but does that really mean going back to the same old places? (The places, it should be said, with lots of hotels and tourism bureaus that spend big bucks advertising in travel mags.)
What do you think? What’s the perfect spot for a same-sex honeymoon? And what’s your priority in a honeymoon destination — one that’s comfortable, or one that’s memorable?

Sorry to disappoint you, but we’re planning on a tour of the New England states … and Montreal. We’ve never been to Montreal, so it’s not one of “the same old places” for us, and while it may be boring for those who have had more opportunity than we’ve to travel, we really would prefer to spend our honeymoon dollars in places where the people think we should be allowed to *have* a honeymoon.
If other same-sex couples would prefer to honeymoon in Riyadh or Salt Lake City, though, more power to them.

Just to clarify: I don’t think there’s anything *wrong* with any of the places on that list. Travel, by definition, is subjective. As long as YOU find a place romantic and memorable, then you picked a great honeymoon spot.
As a writer, I guess my main gripe is with lazy reporting. So many gay travel lists seem to include all the same old spots. “We’re Everywhere,” as the t-shirt says, so why should we vacation only here and there. There are wonderful gay-owned and gay-friendly inns all over the place that would love to welcome same-sex honeymooners, but the travel writers keep falling back on the same old list.
Anyway, I’ll get off my soapbox now. Wishing you guys a wonderful honeymoon and lots of great memories!
